Demanding applications put pressure on material stability
The crowded radio frequency spectrum as well as totally new applications induce higher demands on the material stability. Especially the tolerance of the dielectric constant should be as low as possible in order to improve the reliability of wireless communications.
When searching for materials, it is very common that a material datasheet states only the typical dielectric constant without mentioning how much fluctuation there is. Many commonly used materials may vary up to 5 % due to, e.g., uneven distribution of glass fibers inside the material or low-quality raw materials. If the batch-to-batch variation of a material is too high, it limits the usability in demanding applications such as frequency tuning parts.
PREPERM® offers a tunable dielectric constant and tolerance
PREPERM® standard grades offer already a very good tolerance, but sometimes our customers want even better. One of our customers has a special wish: A material with a dielectric constant of 7.1 and tolerance ±0.1 – meaning that the dielectric constant may vary only 1.4 %. Below is an example of quality control measurement data from an actual production run. Although the 0.1 tolerance is no easy task, we deliver what we promise – thanks to high end machinery, continuous employer training and efficient collaboration between departments.
